There are a lot of great games out right now. But none of them are Twisted Metal and that’s a problem. Twisted Metal was the king of vehicular combat and there has never been another game like it. Sure, there was Vigilante 8, but we’re a Twisted Metal household here at KnowTechie.
Critical Depth is a vehicle combat game similar to Twisted Metal, but with the unique twist that the player pilots subs, in a attempt to gain control of mysterious alien technology. Yes, Twisted Metal 4 has all the tweaks that we screamed about last year, but for me, it's still the same old game. This series, which goes on its fourth anniversary this year, is becoming seriously stale. Deathmatch has always been the main staple of Twisted Metal, but not even that could salvage an otherwise hackneyed formula in TM4. Like other SingleTrac games (most notably JetMoto), the gameplay in Twisted Metal 2 is very well designed. Each car has its own special move, and the game obeys a logical yet totally unrealistic physics model that allows you to turn on a dime and go flying 100 feet in the air. With Sony’s recent announcement of a Twisted Metal TV series that is in the works, it fired me up again about the lack of a new title in the series.
The last time a Twisted Metal game graced our lives was back in 2012 for the PlayStation 3. It was a pretty great experience, but we’re in the age of free-to-play and battle royale games, and honestly, the world (me) wants – no – needs a Twisted Metal battle royale game.
Twisted Metal: Battle Royale
With the popularity of games like Fortnite, PUBG, and Apex Legends, battle royale games are becoming a dime a dozen. Some are better than others but screw all that noise, I want to jump out of a plane in a killer clown ice cream truck and scramble around a map with 99 other scrubs as we frantically search for weapons and early game kills.
The map, an important part of any battle royale title, would include a mixture of city-style areas and more open field type sections. Scaling could be an issue for vehicular battle royale content, but 100% doable. A storm, fire ring, whatever will push players closer together, per the usual, and nonsensical ramps and bridges could be used to expand city areas to rooftops in addition to ground level.
Looting would be standard fare, as well, with an assortment of weaponry and rarities. Special boosts could also be obtained while looting, allowing you to traverse the map extremely fast, or maybe one that also allows you to go vertical rapidly.
Monetization structure
Battle royale gamers can be a picky bunch and players can abandon a battle royale title with the quickness. PUBG had the luxury of leading the pack and, in turn, charging a premium for the experience. Fortnite can credit much of its success to its free-to-play model and constantly changing map, weapons, and features. Apex Legends rode those free-to-play coattails but have been unable to translate that to the same success, much of that due to expensive (and boring) cosmetics.
Our fictional Twisted Metal could be free-to-play, or as an additional mode to a full-fledged game. For our game, we would do a class-based system similar to Apex Legends. Different classes of cars drive differently and feature unique special moves from older titles in the series to help shake it up, as well. We would then take a bit of inspiration from Fortnite, with all classes having a “no-skin” variant that only the scrubs and try-hards use.
For the rest of us, quarterly season passes and a cosmetic shop will allow us to customize our cars. Some skins may only be available for the tanky, slower classes, while others only work on the smaller, faster classes. We could also take a little bit from Rocket League, and include custom boost styles and colors in the cosmetic shop.
I’m sure there are more ideas that I am missing, but yeah, someone make this happen. It’s time for a modern take on the greatest vehicular combat game of all time.
